Race Movie ( Re -edit )

Reading the chapter 4 of America On Film, I know about the race movies .
(from AOF, Race movies are independently produced black - cast films which were distributed to black movie theaters from the late 1910s to the 1950.)

There are some of the popular race movie such as Within Our Gates (1919) and Body and Soul (1925)

Indeed,it's very disappointing to read African Americans were not allowed to enter trade unions to learn skills such as editing or cinematography . That's why they were usually inferior technically.
Approximately five hundred race films were produced. Of these, fewer than one hundred remain. Because race films were produced outside the Hollywood studio system, they have been largely forgotten by mainstream film historians.( Information from Wikipedia )

I would start thinking its difficult for black film makers to raise money to produce their films. Typically, they made less money in the movie industry which made it harder to finance the next movie.Try to imagine, they don't have the advantages of the white movies. They may have less money for investments such as making props, hiring actors or making films. How can they make a good movie? I mean it's not impossible but it does increases the difficulty.

So,under that kind unfair situation , they  can lose the competition with white movies easily.I feel like it was completely unfair.I think everyone should get the equal opportunity to learn if they are talented or get the passion. The right to learn should not be decided by the race which is nothing more than a color.

Bollywood ?

Before checking the link that teacher attached in the blackbroad, I have no ideas what is bollywood.I thought it was a misspelling of Hollywood.Shame on me!

What is bollywood ?Actually,Bollywood is the informal term popularly used for the Hindi-language film industry based in Mumbai, Maharashtra. And now ,it has become the world largest movie industry which is no longer Hollywood but Bollywood.I can't even believe that. But who knows, Indians are so in love with movies, music and dance.Probably, that is why the movie industry in Indian grows so fast.
I bet I have never watched any movies produced in India before and I am curious about that .
Bollywood films are mostly musicals, and are expected to contain catchy music in the form of song-and-dance numbers woven into the script. A film's success often depends on the quality of such musical numbers. Indeed, a film's music is often released before the movie itself and helps increase the audience. (from wikipedia)The first Indian sound film, Ardeshir Irani's Alam Ara (1931)
Since it is a huge success and then more and more sound films have been produced since then.

I watch part of the Indian movie (Qayamat Se Qayamat Tak)
from youtube

However, I feel pretty sad as I cant understand the lyrics while reading all the nice comments from people in YouTube.Yeah, but still I think its a good try though. But it definitely reflects the culture in India even though it is just a short video. But I guess I still pefer the movies from the Hollywood.:)

(Dis)ability

In this week, we learned about disability in films .Reading the chapter16 of the “America on Film”, disables individuals were regarded as freaks or curiosities in early American Film.
The unknown (1927)  is one of the typical examples. It is a 1927 American silent horror film directed by Tod Browning and featuring Lon Chaney as carnival knife thrower Alonzo the Armless and Joan Crawford as the scantily clad carnival girl he hopes to marry. (From Wikipedia)I think its pretty much like a discrimination though some may complain its nothing more about a creation.I doubt .Why he has to be armless ? It can have an influence on how people think about disables.

In some cases, even worse, some "Creative" directors make disables like a horrifying monster like Mystery of the wax Museum (1933) and A nightmare on Elm Street (1984) . Oh well, I mean it's can be fun for us to watch maybe. But I started imagining what about if disables with the same problems as the characters watch the movies,How would they think about movies ? How people think about the dsaibles?

However, it has been improved as time goes by. And there is a new stereotype –Sweet Innocent which tries to invite audience to feel pity about their situation.I definitely like that kind of movies because I think they can increase peoples’ awareness towards disables in a compassionate and warm way.Children of a lesser god (1986 )

In the society nowadays, sadly, discrimination against disables still exists. They are not being treated equally .They are not inferior in fact and should deserve equal chance.Sometimes,in my opinion, movies can affect peoples' mind and attitude towards life.I feel like more warm movies about disables should be produced in order to catch peoples' attention and concern.Hopefully, they can melt their hearts and lend a helping hands so that they can blend into a society with tons of love.

Third Cinema

A few days ago, we learned about Third Cinema in class a few days ago.And I do find some information from the Internet.

According to Wikipedia,  'First Cinema' is to be the Hollywood production model that promulgates bourgeois values to a passive audience through escapist spectacle and individual characters. 'Second Cinema' is the European art film, which rejects Hollywood conventions but is centred on the individual expression of the auteur director. Third Cinema rejects the view of cinema as a vehicle for personal expression, seeing the director instead as part of a collective; it appeals to the masses by presenting the truth and inspiring aggressive activity.

Third Cinema Movies may not be the most popular movie catalog we watched as usually we watch those First Cinema Movies or Second Cinema Movies .It is because sometimes,we love watching something fancy and can be far away from reality. For example , maybe we watch the romantic love story in the Paris .What I am trying to carry out is like we love watching something nice . All the perfect background makes us wish we were inside the movie. Then what about Third Cinema movies ? Personally , I feel like we should watch in order to know how's life in those less well-developed country .Some director nowadays may film those places with aesthetic aspect .So I think it can be another kind of Arts.

Third Cinema movies are usually film in the third world such as Africa ,Asia or either Latin America.
Those places usually encounter with colonial and imperial in order to shape the economic and political power structures .Those films can usually show the historical background ,politics or culture of the places.

I think watching those kind movies can be beneficial to the attitude towards our life .Of course , nowadays ,most of us live in the modern city .But when the time ,we watched the movie from those third world country , we can know how lucky we are instead of just taking everything for granted. We have clean water ,sufficient food and safe shelter .Actually ,we are completed blessed.Besides,we may get more ideas about the historical and political background of those countries from them.Third Cinema movies  should be shown in the school because it is educational yet can be entertaining.

Thriller Movies and Horror Films:Make Your Heart Beat fast

Thriller Movies are definitely one of favourite movie genre .

Thriller is a genre of literature, film and television that uses suspense, tension and excitement as the main elements. The primary subgenres of thrillers are: mystery, crime and psychological thrillers (Definition is from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia )Actually,i am kind of chicken-hearted and i cant sleep at times because of that at times. But still ,I enjoy watching them .

Orphan (2009 )
Oh my god !It 's all about that little creepy girl .I really like that movie A LOT !It definitely meets all the requirement of a good thriller movie. It is with unexpected ending , creepy bloody scene ,and suspecting issues.I 'd strongly recommend if somebody who likes thriller .

Horror films are unsettling movies that strive to elicit the emotions of fear, disgust and horror from viewers. They often feature scenes that startle the viewer through the means of macabre and the supernatural, thus frequently overlapping with the fantasy and science fiction genres. Horrors also frequently overlap with the thriller genre. (Definition is from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia )
What Lies Beneath (2000)

It is a supernatural horror-thriller American film .It makes people think and bring them into another world .Besides , what i like about that is it doesn't contain lots of cruel or bloody scene .The director use another methods to create the creepy and suspecting atmosphere.

I like thriller movies while i don't like horror movie that much .But nowadays ,we can find a lot of mixture of these two types.
Maybe it's because of my belief ,i trust there are ghosts in the world .
Every time , after watching horror movies ,i 'd have a lot imagination about them .And the image about ghosts are really creepy to me .Instead , we can usually find psycho people or crime in those thriller movies ,on the top of that ,they are still human -being .I don't believe there are so many psycho people in the world .

The First League :Lina Wertmüller

Reading over the AOF ,we realised Lina Wertmüller is the first female woman ever to be nominated for an Academy Award for Directing .In order to know more about her ,i did a research about her background.

She was borned in Rome with a catholic Swiss family .And when she was young , she was pretty rebellious and she got expelled from a lots of Catholic school. She got into theatre school even though her family disagreed with. After graduated ,the next tens years , she has been trying to be an actresses and directors.
Finally, she was nominated with an Academy Award nomination for best director with the film -Seven Beauties. We watched the part of the beginning during classes. Here is another scene in the film.

It is funny yet clear .From this very short film ,we can realise the personality of the main character and the style of this film.No doubt ,it is definitely a good film .

I am very glad that Lina Wertmüller didn't give up movie because of her family .Her father has always wanted her to be a lawyer when she was young. However ,instead of going to law school ,she got into theatre school and pursuit her dream. After spending years of time making films ,eventually everything is worth and she is definitely a league .

I think we can learn from her .We always have a dream in our life .No matter how people around us think , we just live for ourselves .And do what we want for our life .And then nothing is impossible if we have the belief and we are willing to try .Before Lina  Wertmüller  ,we may not even think of women can be nominated as the men for the best director .She becomes famous and we all learn about her during class as she is already a part of the moive industry and an encouragment of women who are passionate about making films. We should be proud of her.
